About me

László Pomothy – watercolor

I was born in 1957 in Levice, Slovakia. I graduated from University of Technology in Budapest. Painting and drawing have always been my life passion, even if I temporarily withdrew from this field. It was my fate to return to my lifelong passion though. I was a teenager when I stopped active creation. At that time I took up painting solely as a leisure activity, nothing more. However, when starting afresh, it meant a lot more than just a hobby to me. During the years preceding my resumption I was gradually coming closer and closer to this path. Having seen their exceptionally good pieces of art, I almost felt jealous of other artists‘ success. The overwhelming force of fine arts can provoke feelings and thoughts that would never arise otherwise. I am convinced that I could not live life to the fullest without arts.

I took a brush in my hand around the millennium so that the adult can continue where the child left off. This was the crucial turning point when I decided to take up the challenging aquarelle technique. I read numerous guide books to improve my skills. In fact, the more I became immersed in the mysteries of aquarelle, the more pleasure I found in it. After a few years of hard study, from around 2005 I had several chances to participate in international painting symposiums in Rožňava. There I got to know Ján Kuchta, to whom I am really thankful for introducing a new technique and pictorial view to me. Kuchta is a true master of aquarel and the “wet on wet“ technique.

The 2009 course of Joseph Zbukvic, an Australian water colourist, in St Feliu, Spain, was another turning point in my life. My birthday, celebrated in this Catalan town, remains an evergreen memory to me. It was when I realised that all the effort I invested in painting until then had not been enough and that I needed a more thorough immersion in aquarelle. Still under the influence of the art course I became a student of Herry Arifin, an expressive water colourist from Toronto, who was helping me for almost two years. I am grateful for his detailed guidance during that stage of my artistic development. Learning is a never-ending process for me. I have lately been familiarizing myself with portrait and oil painting technique, with the help of the painter, György Dolán.

I rarely exhibit my paintings; I haven’t considered it important up to now. This website might help me set things right though.

My exhibitions so far:
Galánta, Slovakia (2003, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013)
XII. Biennale dell´ Acquarello (Albignasego – Italy, 2012)

A well-done piece of art makes me truly happy. However, I am still not convinced that I have painted the perfect picture, the one that gives full satisfaction to me. Quite a lot of time has been wasted by this long intermission of mine so I aim to deal exclusively with painting in the future. I would love to reveal something new, to create every day. Though my grandfather passed more than forty years ago, his set of red copper embossment is treasured even today. To me, these pieces represent his undying memory; good objects of art transfer their creator to posterity. I wish I could leave behind me something similar one day.
